Founded in 2001, the Santa Monica Daily Press (SMDP) was created to provide thoughtful, independent reporting for a dynamic city facing complex challenges. Today, it remains a leading local news source, blending strong journalistic roots with modern digital tools and serving as an essential platform for community engagement and local business outreach.
SMDP’s office demonstrates their commitment to green operations through thoughtful purchasing, waste-reduction practices, and employee-focused green initiatives. Their primary newspaper stock features 60% post-consumer recycled content — the highest level available for newspapers — significantly reducing the environmental impact of their print operations. For internal printing needs, the office has transitioned to 100% post-consumer recycled copy paper.
The SMDP workplace is proudly bike-friendly, offering secure indoor bike storage for both employees and visitors, as well as office-owned bicycles that staff can use for local errands. A bike repair kit, complete with tools, a pump, and supplies for fixing punctured tubes, supports and encourages low-carbon commuting.
To reduce single-use items, the office is shifting to reusable coffee pods and has eliminated aerosol products entirely, replacing them with pump-spray cleaners and air fresheners. Through these actions, the SMDP demonstrates practical and impactful sustainability measures into its daily operations.
